-Christina Lauren, The Honey-Don't List
Approach
I take a relationship-centered approach to couples therapy. This means I consider the relationship between the couple to be my primary client rather than either of the partners. I incorporate elements of integrative behavioral couple therapy, structural family therapy, and the Gottman Method into my work. My goal in couples therapy is to explore the complex relationship dynamics that lead to miscommunication and conflict and help couples find more effective ways to communicate, live, and love together. I do not enter into couples therapy with any preconceived notion of what the "right" kind of relationship is, and I am comfortable working with couples of all genders, sexual orientations, religious and cultural backgrounds.
Areas of Expertise
My training in couples therapy has focused on adults experiencing marital conflict, stress, and feelings of detachment or estrangement. As a parent of two, I am particularly sensitive to the ways that parenting, time constraints, and financial burdens can create additional stress and conflict in relationships, and I have worked with many couples to find more effective strategies to manage these challenges. I developed my approach to couples therapy through graduate and postgraduate trainings and supervised experiences treating couples at both a VA healthcare center and a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. Through these experiences, I have become comfortable working with couples from a variety of backgrounds, including those in cross-cultural relationships and those with one or more partners who have immigrated to the United States from abroad.
