Approach
I take a client-centered approach to individual therapy that prioritizes your personal goals and values. Long-term recovery depends on developing effective coping skills to manage life's many challenges while fostering and maintaining a sense of meaning, purpose, and direction to keep us moving forward when times are tough. As a therapist, my goal is to help each client establish a resilient, lasting recovery that allows them to live their best life.
Areas of Expertise
I am a Harvard-trained therapist with an extensive background in both mindfulness-based and cognitive behavioral approaches to psychotherapy. I also have specialized training in the field of health behavior change. In plain English, "health behavior change" is about helping people change old, hard-to-break habits and create new, lasting and healthier ones. I commonly apply these skills to help people develop a more healthy and fulfilling relationship with their finances, manage addictive behaviors, improve their physical health, and cope with chronic illnesses. I have years of experience and training providing therapy in a variety of settings, including outpatient mental health centers, primary care clinics, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, and addictions clinics.
In my clinical work, I usually employ mindfulness training, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and/or motivational interviewing to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addictive behaviors, among other concerns. Mindfulness training can be a powerful tool when it is effectively integrated into psychotherapy, and may be especially helpful for those experiencing anxiety and recurrent depression. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach I have specific expertise in that incorporates aspects of mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral techniques. While I am a strong advocate for making mindfulness training available and accessible to those who are interested, I recognize it is not a one-size fits all approach. For those who would like to explore other options, I often suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based approach with strong scientific support and no mindfulness-based components.
